Victory in Christ

From Death to Life, From Addiction to Freedom

Eight months clean. Those words hold a depth I never imagined possible when I first reached for cannabis at twelve years old. At that age, I was just a child — impressionable, unformed, searching for identity and belonging. I didn’t know that what seemed like a moment of experimentation would shape the next decade of my life, clouding my mind and dragging my soul into darkness. I remember being in grade eight — still a boy — and feeling high even the next day after smoking. It wasn’t just the drug; it was the confusion, the haze that crept into every part of who I was. Over time, the fog became familiar.

I didn’t realize that early exposure had altered how I viewed myself, my fears, and even my ability to think clearly. Cannabis promised peace but delivered anxiety. It promised confidence but left me insecure. It promised escape, but I only grew more trapped. It breaks my heart to see how normalized this culture has become — how many young people are walking the same path I did. The accessibility, the glamorization, the illusion of harmlessness — it’s everywhere. My heart aches for the twelve-year-olds today who, just like I once was, are being drawn into something that seems harmless but ends up stealing years of clarity, purpose, and peace. But the story doesn’t end there.

From Bondage to Freedom

Jesus Christ met me in the middle of my brokenness. Not after I cleaned myself up — but in the mess, when I was still numb, confused, and chained. His victory over death wasn’t just a story I read about; it became my reality. The moment I surrendered to Him, everything began to shift. Christ’s finished work on the cross didn’t just promise eternal life later — it brought resurrection power into my life now. The same victory that rolled away the stone also rolled away my shame. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead began restoring what addiction had destroyed in me: my mind, my sanity, my identity. I no longer define myself by what I escaped, but by who rescued me. My identity is rooted in Jesus Christ — not in my past, not in my struggle, but in His victory.

Renewing the Mind

Freedom didn’t happen by willpower; it came through surrender. Every day, I’ve learned to rebuke spiritual darkness and walk in renewed truth. The fog that once ruled my thinking began to lift through fellowship, mentorship, and the daily washing of God’s Word. The 12-step program gave structure to my recovery, but the blood of Jesus gave it power. The rooms at Freedom’s Door and the men and women who walked with me became living reminders of grace in action. Every morning, I open my Bible and invite the Holy Spirit to renew me — transforming the same mind that once chased escape into one that seeks peace in Christ. What used to be chaos has now become clarity. What used to be craving has turned into contentment. And I know this: I didn’t do this on my own. Every moment of strength, every clear thought, every breath of peace — it all flows from His finished work.

The Power of His Victory

Christ’s victory over death speaks directly into the battle of addiction. Death comes in many forms — despair, confusion, hopelessness, bondage. But when Jesus rose, He conquered all of it. My freedom is not self-made; it’s inherited. Because He lives, I live differently. Every temptation becomes an opportunity to declare His triumph. Every moment of weakness becomes a reminder of His strength. Every day clean is a visible echo of the empty tomb — proof that life has conquered death.

A New Declaration

Today, I walk in gratitude. I thank God for mentors who believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself, for Christian brothers who stood beside me through the hardest battles, for the rooms of recovery where grace and truth met me right where I was — but most of all, I thank Jesus Christ for His blood that made all things new. I once lived in death, confusion, and addiction. Now, I live in light, truth, and freedom.
I am clean.
I am adopted.
I am redeemed.
And I am walking in His victory — from death to life, from addiction to freedom.

  4. Thank you, Nicholas, for sharing your heart and the truth of the honest work it takes to allow Jesus to bring the healing strength you needed to break free in Christ. Jesus gives strength for the work that is done by faith, and you reap the victory. How good is that?
