Genesis 6:5 The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 So the LORD was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart.
This verse breaks my heart every time I read it. Gen. 6:6 So the LORD was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart. I find myself apologizing to God for the wretchedness of mankind, and for the fact that man can be counted on, not to be counted on. Imagine God sitting back and saying “I wish I had never made them.” What an indictment against our good intentions, as the result of everything we do, is evil continually. Yes, I’m sure there are a few things we do that come from a well-intentioned heart, but when the heart is corrupted, even what we think might be good and acceptable to God, ends up short of the holy mark. Jer. 17:9 The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?
Those who say we have come a long way to being an enlightened civilization and have made great strides toward moral excellence are fooling themselves. If anything, the rise of the world idiocracy has pointed out that humanity has become anything but enlightened. We continue to hate each other, declare war on one another, and continue to murder those who bring the smallest offence that is contrary to their beliefs. Gen. 4:23 Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say; for I have killed a man [merely] for wounding me, and a boy [only] for striking (bruising) me.
Mankind continues to slip downward toward his base nature of compromise, selfishness, and evil intent. Humanity is no longer looking for the truth but rather, is looking for those who will agree with their views of whatever nonsense they choose to be their truth. 2Tim. 4:3 For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. When we, the human race, are left to our interpretation of what is right and wrong, we inevitably ruin everything. Without the guiding love, understanding, and instruction of God, we are truly doomed to repeat the evil that took place before Noah’s flood when evil was the only thought emanating from a person’s heart.
History demonstrates that when mankind reaches a state of perpetual wickedness, becoming doomed is the inevitable result. Eze. 7:7a Your doom has come to you, O inhabitant of the land. The time has come; the day is near, a day of tumult. The destruction that mankind brings upon itself also feeds on itself and creates even more disaster. Then, the populace looks to their leaders for answers, but the leaders have lost their ability to reason because, in a lot of cases, it was their leadership that led the masses astray. Eze. 7:26 Calamity upon calamity will come, and rumor upon rumor. They will go searching for a vision from the prophet, priestly instruction in the law will cease, the counsel of the elders will come to an end. What this so-called enlightened generation seems to forget, is that the wages of sins the works of iniquity are still death.
As I look around this world that I am part of, and see the problems that arise in every part of it, I can understand the need for a Saviour. I, like so many of you, can feel overwhelmed by the chaos that is pouring forth from every corner and field of our planet. We need deliverance from ourselves. The world is truly groaning under the weight of mankind’s sins. The very ground became cursed after Adam sinned. How much more is the ground rebelling against the world’s perpetual sinfulness? This train of thought can be wearisome. Psalm 73:16 When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply. We need to cling to the fact that even though God said He wished He had not created us, He still came in His love for us and delivered our souls from eternal loss through His gift of redemption.
Even though mankind is still as evil as evil can be, the Lord’s sacrificial death on the cross for our sake is the olive branch God is extending to us. When He said that we would be in this world but not of this world, God knew what we would be up against throughout our lives. He also knew that everything we would ever need for victory would be found in, lived by, and acquired through the blood of Jesus, who cleanses us from all sins. God’s plan for our deliverance in Christ would bring this world into reconciliation by entering the covenant God made for us by accepting His eternal gift. Although everything seems like it is going through constant disaster and destruction, we have a Lord who will guide us through all the mayhem. He will even guide us through the death process. Psalm 48:14 For this is God, our God for ever and ever; He will be our guide even to death. If our Heavenly Father is going to lead us through the uncertainties of dying, we can rest in the fact that God will lead us through life. Go forth, and live to the fullest by being a blessing in this noisy world.
