The Memory Tree

Proverbs 10:7 The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.

My wife and I have lived in the same house since the late nineteen-eighties. We raised our two sons here on this big lot with room for fun and imagination. They had all kinds of places to play and grow up in all seasons. The boys have moved out and on their own now. However, a lot of their treasures (they are to me) show up once in a while in different parts of the yard. Spring has come early out here in the south-western part of Canada.
I have started the spring yard work as in getting the garden beds ready and the fruit trees pruned and so on. Every year as I am cleaning up dead foliage or stems from last years colorful displays, I always find a plastic ninja turtle ring or a tin car peeking through the natural mulch. Somehow these trinkets make their way to the surface of the soil, poking their way through.
Yesterday, I found a malleable small plastic soldier and a yellow hard plastic dinosaur. The soldier belonged to my oldest and the dinosaur came from my youngest son’s inventory of playtime imagination. I have a honeysuckle creeper that is old and well-established. It winds its way up a heavy duty trellis. I always take these treasures of the past and hang, twist and squeeze them into the stems and branches until they become part of this huge plant that has come to be known as my memory tree.
The amount of bobbles, farm animals, soldiers and parts of action figures that protrude from the limbs are first, colorful and second, a blessed archival record of smiles, laughter and fond memories gone by. I literally smile every time I find one of these plastic diamonds per-se. How fortunate I was yesterday when I found two memories, one for each son. Yup, they went right up there in the memory tree and I sent up a prayer of gratitude to my God for giving me these wonderful sons.
God has been doing the same with His children that He loves unconditionally and whom He has a relationship with. The Lord has a sort of memory tree and I am sure it is much more colorful and diverse. We read in Mal. 3:16 Then they that feared the LORD spoke often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.
Imagine, every time we think and talk about the wonderful things God has done for us, our names go into His memory tree or book of remembrance. Often people will wonder if God even notices them or the sacrifice they have done on behalf of someone else. We can rest assured that God sees our hearts in everything we do.
If God is measuring our hearts in giving a glass of cold water to anyone needing a drink, then don’t worry He knows what your sacrifices have been throughout your life. Matt. 10:42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.
To be thought of fondly by our heavenly Father is a blessing within our hearts that is immeasurable. To know that we know that we are in the love of God’s favor is a place of intense joy and well being. Psalm 91:1 He that dwells in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. To be engraved into the Lord’s memory book because we give glory to His name is the goodness of God manifested in our lives.
God takes the time to record our thoughts and our expressions of joy concerning our God. We bring joy to the Lord’s heart as He writes about our day in a similar way we muse over an old photo album and we pick out the good memories. I know that all things will be judged, good or bad. 2 Cor. 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. However, there are a lot more joys in the Lord than there are regrets if we get right down to the honesty of it. I have walked with Jesus for over thirty-six years now and I wonder what has been hooked, squeezed and hung in God’s memory tree from my life.
I will continue to look for the blessings in my life so that I may proclaim out loud the wonders of the Lord. Knowing that my name is being written down because of the joyful talk just adds flavor to my walk with the Lord. Blessings to all of you, and may you all hear the Lord’s pen scratching your name down today.

Beautiful! My mom always finds our old marbles in the yard. They will be even more special since we lost my brother. This was a beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing. Blessings.

Spiritually Empty

Proverbs 31:26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness.              Who are the ones living their spiritual lives on empty? I've noticed that those who break God's laws regularly tend to fall apart when times go bad. They just seem...
