Joshua 2:10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites across the Jordan, whom you devoted to destruction. 11 When we heard this, our hearts melted and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.
There is a low hum of dissipation within the hearts of many. A feeling of dread and unfulfilled living on a worldwide scale has captured the souls of many. People are feeling something ominous in their psyche, but have no name for it. They feel out of sorts and frightened that things won’t go back to normal anytime soon. Folk know they are being lied to continually, but have no idea what to do about it. Others feel a sense of ill will being planned against them, but this, too, cannot be understood because they do not know why they feel targeted. They feel like everything around them is sketchy, and they have a strong need to look over their shoulders for something unknown and unseen.
When someone says, “The news feels so heavy, it makes me feel so anxious.” That’s because there is no good news to hang our hopeful hats on. This constant televised hour-by-hour watching of man’s lowest form of existence is causing a deep sense of dread in the hearts of mankind. This is causing the subconscious to reinforce the feeling that all is not right. I, for one, a few years ago, removed all the news channels from my TV stick. I felt that there was no point in listening to the news because it was an endless reporting of one mess after another, all in the guise of keeping people informed. It is not keeping people informed; it is keeping people bound in fear for their lives. Luke 21:26 Men will faint from fear and anxiety over what is coming upon the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
There truly is a shaking up taking place, and I believe a line is being drawn in the sand by God Himself. The voice of heaven is saying, “He who is for Me, on this side, and those against Me, over there.” There is a shaking off of all the useless stuff that is attached to the hearts of many. The Lord said that judgment would first come to the church, and I’m feeling that conviction. 1Pet. 4:17 For it is the time for the judgment to have begun from the house of God; and if from us first, what will be the end of those being disobedient to the gospel of God?
I heard someone say, “We have some hard choices. We need to choose between the comfort of misery and the pain of change.” There will be pain that the flesh will need to go through to find the peace of the Lord. The flesh is going to have to give up some of the gods it picked up over time. We have been seeking peace in the world and have found none, because the world cannot give away what it doesn’t have. John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid. Our choice is between the comfort of remaining miserable because we have lived in that state so long, or the pain of changing with the guidance of the Holy Spirit into the person God wants us to become.
It seems that the low hum of dread might be sending us towards God in an earnest manner of seeking truth for our lives. We can either find the resolve to follow Jesus and develop into who He created us to be, or we can remain paralyzed in the turmoil of the world. We can let the Lord lead us besides green fields and still waters, as declared in Psalm 23, or we can remain in the rat race of social existence. Matt 11:29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
When Rahab hid the two spies that Joshua had sent to spy out Jericho, she revealed the dread that the city had been living under for over forty years. Josh. 2:10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites across the Jordan, whom you devoted to destruction. 11 When we heard this, our hearts melted and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in the heavens above and on the earth below. That is how long people can learn to live with anxiousness and not do anything about it. This is not how God wants His people to live.
Jesus said that He came to give us life and abundant life at that. Stop focusing on the never-changing news of the world, and focus on the One who created the world so that we could live in the peace that God’s grace gives us. Heb. 12:2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting Him, He endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now He is seated in the place of honour beside God’s throne.
