The Difference A Day Makes

Proverbs 27:1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

The day after John the Baptizer baptized Jesus and proclaimed Him the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, Andrew, one of John’s disciples left and followed Jesus. Andrew also persuaded his brother Simon to come and meet Jesus. John 1:41 He first found his brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. It must have been amazing for Simon upon meeting Jesus, to have a word of destiny spoken into and over his life. Simon’s name and identity would be forever changed by meeting Christ. John 1:42 Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, “Your name is Simon, son of John—but you will be called Cephas” (which means “Peter”).

Not only was Peter’s life changed forever, but so was all of mankind and the history that would follow. John the Baptist was like a baton carrier in the race of life. John ministered out of the Old Testament laws, baptizing unto repentance. Jesus was introduced as the one who would baptize in the Holy Spirit and would bring about the New Testament that we live in today. What a day of transition that turned out to be. John recognized the day and significance of that time in history and proclaimed that Jesus must become the eternal focus of our lives John 3:30 It is necessary for Him to increase and for me to decrease.

What a difference a day makes when we submit and allow the Lord to speak into our hearts. Those of us who have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, have had a similar experience to what Peter had. Through the Holy Spirit, we met Jesus face to face and began an eternal relationship with Him as the Spirit directed our steps. Like Peter, many of us have fallen in our faith along the way, but as we repented and got up, we continued the walk with the Lord. Like so many Christians who have suffered before us, we too have experienced hard times and eventful traumas. However, after spending quality time in the Lord’s presence, we received the courage that was needed to move on. Psalm 30:5b Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.

The Proverb states that we should not boast about tomorrow. Prov. 27:1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring. At the same time, we should not complain about what tomorrow might bring. The same reason is stated in the Proverb – we do not know what a day may bring, and therefore, complaining about it is a waste of time. The Lord admonishes us to live in the day we are in and to not worry about tomorrow. Worrying cannot add one thing to our lives except more worry. Matt. 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

The Lord wants us to trust in Him because He has the number of our days in His hands. In just one day anything can change. Only God can get us through whatever troubles a day brings our way. There was a severe famine in the land of Israel. The famine had reached the point where cannibalism had taken place. Elisha makes a declaration of what God is going to do for the people. 2Kings 7:1 Then Elisha said, “Listen to the word of the LORD; this is what the LORD says: ‘About this time tomorrow a measure of fine flour will be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Samaria.’” The next day, as God had said, there was food for all. What a difference a day made. Sometimes we need to take our eyes off the mess and let God take care of the day of trouble we find ourselves in. Give God your day.
Nine years ago I had a day that would change my life. A normal Saturday evening turned into a chaotic night of a stroke, ambulances, emergency rooms and tests of all kinds. The next day while I was thanking God that I had made it through and lived, I vowed that I would start to live a healthy life and make choices that would bring healing to my heart and life. Deut. 30:19 This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live. What a difference that day made for me. To this day, I remain steadfast in living up to the promises I made to God. In one day, my life changed for the better because I chose life. Put your trust in the Lord and let Him take you through the days that are set before you, and serve Him with all your life’s abilities. Yes, choose life.
