1Samuel 28:7 Then Saul said to his servants, “Find for me a woman who is a medium, so that I may go to her and inquire of her.” And his servants said to him, “Behold, there is a woman who is a medium at En-dor.”
Alveda King: posted, “Our world shouts to get attention. But truth doesn’t need volume—it needs courage. Let’s choose truth over noise”.
To exchange one cult for another is not progress; it’s merely inviting more noise that distracts from the truth. Syncretism has become a go-to belief system for people to rest their cherry-picked morals upon; a religion of convenience that changes with the whims of pop culture and political dogma. People are trying to find a middle-of-the-road belief that can satisfy the longing in their hearts and stop the noise in their heads. We are watching this swapping of cults taking place on a national stage. The Christian nationalists are swapping their constitutional god for a self-proclaimed political god in Trumpism. Jer. 17:5 This is what the LORD says: “Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind, who makes mere flesh his strength and turns his heart from the LORD. Members of the Christ-culture cult are swapping their allegiance for the more lucrative commodification of the Christian consumerism movement while excluding any type of sacrificial life and service to the Lord, Jesus. Others are not sure what to believe because the smorgasbord of beliefs to choose from is overwhelming. Prov. 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. God is not the author of confusion. He brings His peace to our being when we seek Him with all our hearts as we pick up our cross and follow Him.
Faith that is gained through a cult is uninspiring. The consequences of this type of humanism are that it will relegate Jesus to the category of a cause to believe in, like picking up the cause of cleaning up the old tires that have plugged up the river, rather than accepting Jesus fully as the Lord of lords and King of kings. We cannot let Jesus become a menu item to be discussed as one of the possibilities for change, or sadly, given an honourable mention for being a good example for honest life choices. When swapping cults or leaving one cult for another, so that one’s ego can be stroked, the problem remains the same: the cult members are still sitting on the throne of their heart, and Jesus is only an echo in the background. Ex. 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Faith in a cult does not help one become true to God. It typically inspires a fervent devotion to the cult. If someone is not steadfast in their belief in God, discerning the secular noises can become tiring as people go through the pressures of life, trying to understand their purpose. Psalm 73:16 When I pondered to understand this, it was troublesome in my sight. Reams and reams of information through every imaginable media platform are rushing at all the people, all the time, and all at once. The volume of streaming thoughts is screaming for attention, and the human condition becomes overloaded discerning between the truth and the digital hearsay. Thomas Sowell said, “Truth needs effort, lies just need volume”. This is a good point. Truth needs effort on our part that we may live it and walk in it, so that it becomes real in our hearts.
When we become lackadaisical in our efforts to walk according to the Word of God, the eventual stress of cognitive dissonance crowds the minds of those who are living a lukewarm existence. Their mental discomfort, stress, and anxiety begin to conflict with their beliefs, revealing that the gratefulness that was once felt for what God had done for them is now old and stale manna from times past. The Apostle Paul described this mental discomfort as being ‘tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine’ that causes the anxiety they are living with. However, Paul exhorted us not to stay in that place. Eph. 4:14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed about by the waves and carried around by every wind of teaching and by the clever cunning of men in their deceitful scheming.
King Saul had ruined everything in his life to the point that he was seeking out the advice of a witch. It was not always that way. At one time, Saul was walking in obedience to God. 1Sam. 10:10 When Saul and his servant arrived at Gibeah, they saw a group of prophets coming toward them. Then the Spirit of God came powerfully upon Saul, and he, too, began to prophesy. Over time, Saul started interpreting God’s laws to suit his ego and maintain his political popularity. It seems that nothing changes in politics. Once politics replaces the authority of God on the throne of one’s heart, anything goes and most of the time a cult is born. How did Saul go from prophesying under the power of the Spirit of God to asking a medium to talk to the dead for him? 1Samuel 28:7 Then Saul said to his servants, “Find for me a woman who is a medium, so that I may go to her and inquire of her.” And his servants said to him, “Behold, there is a woman who is a medium at En-dor.”
Spiritual growth within the Godhead does not mature by wandering from one false-hearted system to another. The power of faith is not in the religion; it is in God, who makes our devotion real through Christ. It comes by entrusting our eternal being to God the Father and accepting His gift of eternal life that comes through God the Son. Spiritual growth will happen when we fight the good fight of faith in the power of the Holy Spirit. Zech. 4:6b Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the LORD of Hosts. We will walk in the peace of God when we honestly walk in obedience to God the Father and the Word He has given us. Amos 3:3 Can two walk together, unless they are agreed? We need to agree with God so that we can grow into the version of who God knows us to be.
Swapping one erroneous belief for a false teaching only helps us dig a deeper pit to fall into. We mature in a relationship with God by responding through faith in His Word. Therefore, let us consider what the writer of Ecclesiastes says, “Let us hear the conclusion of the matter.” Eccl. 12:13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. Our duty to God is to keep His Word in our hearts and live by His instructions for life and salvation. Let us be at peace with this life’s assignment that God has sown in our hearts while we go forth in the love and blessings of our Lord, who keeps us close to His heart.
