Ezekiel 8:12 “Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his own idol? For they are saying, ‘The LORD does not see us; the LORD has forsaken the land.’”
My father-in-law often said, “Show me your friends, and I will tell you who you are.” Over the years, I have found his saying to be true. People do pick up from and often become like the people they hang with. We can learn a lot from what people do rather than what they say. Show me your food pantry, and I will see how healthy you really are. Show me your gym routine, and I will know if you put in the work. Show me your medicine cabinet, and I will have an idea if you really want to heal. Show me your browser history, and I will definitely know what you chase in life. We leave our psychological footprint in all that we do throughout our lives as markers of who we are. We either create good and wholesome habits or we trudge along in the despair of poor choices. This can be arduous for some people because there is very little grace from mankind for mankind. Once labelled with a sin, that label is hard to peel off without someone trying to stick it back on.
The thing about our life’s choices and browser history is that God has a record of the one that has been flowing through our minds our whole lives, and therefore, He truly knows who we are. We cannot fool Him with righteous activities or fashionable words of exhortation. We are who we are, and that is not hidden from Him. Eze. 8:8 “Son of man,” He told me, “dig through the wall.” So I dug through the wall and discovered a doorway. 9 Then He said to me, “Go in and see the wicked abominations they are committing here.” 10 So I went in and looked, and engraved all around the wall was every kind of crawling creature and detestable beast, along with all the idols of the house of Israel. God said to Ezekiel to dig through the wall. Dig a little deeper and see what humanity is made of. Show us your habits, and we will read you like a book.
There is no way to delete our browser history because everything is stored in the cloud. There is no deleting our sin’s history except that we are washed in the cleansing blood of the Lord Jesus. Through Christ alone, our sins, iniquities, and transgressions are forgiven and deleted from our lives. Psalm 103:12 As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. Yes, there may be consequences for what we sowed with our sinning, but the sin itself will be washed away. There were consequences when David and Bathsheba committed adultery. The child conceived in the affair died at birth, and David stepped up his sinfulness by having Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband, murdered on the battlefield. The sins were forgiven, but the residual effects lived on in the lives of those who committed the transgressions. Gal. 6:7 Do not be misled: God is not mocked. For whatever a man might sow, that also he will reap.
We are very good at wearing masks, thinking we are smarter than God, but in reality, we end up acting childlike. We think we can cover our tracks that are plainly seen as if someone walked through a field in fresh snow. Adam and Eve hid from God in the Garden of Eden, which was not a good idea then, and it is still not a good idea. We will be found. Gen. 3:9 But the LORD God called out to the man, “Where are you?” 10 “I heard Your voice in the garden,” he replied, “and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.” Our immaturity in trying to hide who we are from God is childish and transparent in the same way as when we were children hiding under a blanket, thinking our parents could not see us. Eze. 8:12 “Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his own idol? For they are saying, ‘The LORD does not see us; the LORD has forsaken the land.’” Show me your heart, and out of it will come the issues of your life. Luke 6:45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
When God asks us to show Him our repentant heart, it is so we can also see how He has brought healing to our hearts. God heals our inner being of the deadly and fatal effects that the sins caused within our lives. This is how God deletes the sins of our souls’ history. The Lord forgives and heals so that there is complete salvation. Heb. 8:12 For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more. Unlike the cloud space where our history is written in bytes and code, God throws our past sins into a sea of forgetfulness, where not even Satan can find them. The Lord cleans us up for His use. Zech. 3:3 Now Joshua was dressed in filthy garments as he stood before the angel. 4 So the angel said to those standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes!” Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have removed your iniquity, and I will clothe you with splendid robes.”
What a beautiful personal scene this scripture gives our hearts. Change Joshua’s name to our own, and see the Lord work in our lives. So the angel said to those standing before him, “Take off Norm’s filthy clothes!” Then he said to Norm, “See, I have removed your iniquity, and I will clothe you with splendid robes.” Now, we can say to each other, “Show me your robe of righteousness, and I will know who your Lord is!” Yes, show me your God. What a day that will be, when my Jesus I shall see.
