A Fool’s Errand

Proverbs 28:26 He that trusts in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walks wisely, he shall be delivered.

As the ship was tied up to dockside in Tangier, it became clear that we were not only miles from home, but also centuries from our time. Dark and weathered dock workers dressed in caftans and single-loop sandals were tying the ship to the dock. Some of these old crusty men had fez hats, and others wore colourful customary beanie caps.
Livestock of all sorts were being lowered by archaic winches, pulleys, and tackle. Old carts, drawn by beasts of burden hauling away large baled bundles of goat skins. Gurgling sounds came from the protesting camels, as they were led away carrying their loads of exotic goods.
The heat fermented an aroma that ponged as it attacked the nostrils to the point of nausea. Gangplanks were drawn for foot passengers to carefully make their way down to the old dock. As we walked off the passenger ramp, our passports were stamped and visas issued by the sweaty men in worn-out customs uniforms that dated back to the second world war.
It was a scene from “The Curse Of The Mummy’s Tomb.” and there we were, traveling Morocco, looking for spiritual enlightenment. In 1971 my friend and I were eighteen years old and traveling throughout Europe and Morocco. Many of my contemporaries were doing the same and traveling as far as the Middle East and India. So many travelers at the time were looking for spiritual enlightenment, but most of them came home disillusioned and suffering from dysentery: 2 Tim. 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Many people, then and now, are looking for God on their own terms. They want a God that they can control and, therefore, write the rules to their own lives. Isa. 29:13 Wherefore the Lord said, For as much as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men.

When thing go wrong, like a shooting in a school, these same people are normally the first to complain about the Godlessness exhibited in the Country today. Yet, they are the ones who wrote the new gospel of trusting in our own hearts (this is my truth, and that is your truth) and the result manifesting as a group of fools wondering why the God of eternity does not do something. Hag. 1:9 Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.
We, as a solipsistic society, will rationalize and spin anything to our own heart’s belief and desire, even when we know it is not true.
We have been led to believe that trusting in our own hearts (our own manifesto) is the way to accomplishing our dreams, but many have found their personal nightmares instead: Lam. 5:15 The joy of our heart is ceased; our dance is turned into mourning. from investing in a scam that first appeared the best deal of the century, to marrying the wrong person who turned out to be a wife-beater.
What went wrong? We were trusting in the selfishness of our hearts and not the Spirit of God’s guiding of our hearts by His word. Jer. 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it.
A heart that is not owned or occupied by the Lord can be deceived and can be led astray because there is no confidence of heart or understanding of God’s wisdom. We need, by faith to believe that God’s will and purpose in our hearts is a good thing. Eze. 11:19a And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you.

If we are having a hard time believing that God’s thoughts toward us are pure and of blessing, then it will be difficult gaining the confidence we need in God to live our lives in this precarious world. John 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. Jesus said He was the only way to God.
I would rather trust Jesus then my own heart’s patch-work of syncretism trying to make everything fit to my liking. This fallacy of belief will eventually lead to disillusionment and dare I say it. “Spiritual dysentery.” There are already too many winds of doctrine that lead people astray without adding to them. I am content to be in the Lord’s hands, being led and loved along the way. Sng. 2:4 He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.

Ironies To Contemplate

There Is No Hate Like Christian Hate

Proverbs 6:16 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to Him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a lying witness who gives false...

Anger Is Expensive

Proverbs 16:32 He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.         In the early 1980s, while attending Bible college and living in Australia, I ministered in prisons for a few years. A common regret among...

Choose Your Hard

Matthew 11:29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. No matter what people say, life is hard. Some have it much harder than others, but overall, for most of the world's population, life is...

Make Your Bed

Acts 9:33 There he found a certain man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden eight years and was paralyzed. 34 And Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you. Arise and make your bed.” Then he arose immediately.         I heard Derek Prince say, "The voice...

You Can’t Say That!

Matthew 10:19 But when they hand you over, do not worry about how to respond or what to say. In that hour you will be given what to say. My pronouns are The Redeemed of the Lord, and The Righteousness of God through Christ Jesus. You can call me that anytime you want....

A Useful Idiot

Ezekiel 28:18 By the multitude of your iniquities, with the injustice of your trading, you have profaned your holy places. And I have brought forth fire from your midst; it has devoured you, and I have given you to ashes upon the earth, before the eyes of all those...

The Low Hum Of Dread

Joshua 2:10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites across the Jordan, whom you devoted to destruction. 11 When we heard this, our hearts...

That’s A Lot Of Faith

Acts 19:19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totalled fifty thousand pieces of silver.         When God gets hold of a person's heart, there is...

Christianism Falls Short

Galatians 1:8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be under a curse!       Christianism generally refers to the use of Christian principles as a political ideology. This is why Christianism does...

Keep Breathing

Genesis 2:7 Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.         My friend Glennis asked her hundred-year-old grandfather what the secret to longevity was. He...

Living Loving Laughing

Daniel 5:5 In the same hour, the fingers of a man’s hand appeared and wrote opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace; and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. 6 Then the king’s countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him,...

Adjusting To Chaos

Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.         Those who have found themselves easily adjusting to chaos, led by...
