Pathologized Ad Nauseam

Matthew 23:24 Blind guides–those straining out the gnat and swallowing the camel! 25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.

Every little snort, sideways glance or odd gesture that man exhibits is now pathologized ad nauseam. Psychobabble is the language being used to describe these human traits and explain away the misunderstanding that many have towards each other. The loosely defined diagnosis given by so many of the self-proclaimed media gurus is whatever sounds trendy, and has become referred to as diagnosis creep. They have created an environment where the soul of personal thought is being removed and replaced with a social pablum of commonality. Rom. 1:22 Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. Labelling anxious thoughts as another syndrome feels like they are making rules for a race for the bottom of living an apathetic existence. Claiming to be helping people find their way through the maze of social acceptance, they drive them into deeper despair. Matt. 15:14  Disregard them! They are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.

Why can we no longer mind our own business and live without being on someone’s psych list? Why do we need an elaborate explanation for every nonsensical thought? As long as we keep explaining the misbehaviour of the masses as a symptom of human circumstances, we will be left with humanistic analysis, rather than realizing that man’s heart is easily manipulated toward failure. Mankind keeps looking for answers outside of God’s declarations of what is right and true. Man’s heart is sinful and needs deliverance from itself, but it cannot be delivered by ourselves. Jer. 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? This is the dilemma we face. We need help that is from outside of ourselves, but we do not acknowledge the One who can and has provided the way of saving, healing, or nurturing our souls back to life.

Many counsellors, psychologists, and psychiatrists are sincere in their dedication to helping those who have given up on life. The difficulty that arises for these well-meaning caregivers is that they cannot give away what they do not have. They cannot heal morally wounded souls with secular therapy. The soul of man needs inner healing that comes from God who created every soul in His image. Trying to heal a deep spiritual conflict with a few exercises in positive thinking might provide some temporary relief as this is prone to do for a season of time, but this is often short-lived when the emptiness in the soul rises to the surface again. Some positive results come from those who are trying to help those suffering from soul sickness – which is most often described as mental and anxiety disorders – but again, the newfound feel-good moment only lasts for a short time.

Without meaning to, these caregivers become dispensers of watered-down platitudes and listless advice that simply causes a lot of head nodding and whispers of “Hmm.” Therefore, quick decisions to medicate become the tool of choice, resulting in lonely depressed people crying for any reason to want to live. Psalm 18:41a They cried for help, but there was no one to save them. Man needs a redeemer to heal their inner man that is lost in the confusion of the world’s offerings of quick fixes. The spirit of man is dead until the Spirit of God’s life moves into the once-dead heart and gives it eternal life. Prescriptions cannot heal the moral bankruptcy that is now accepted within normal life. Isa. 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!

The overwhelming amount of people in need of help is swamping the waiting rooms of the medical practitioners, who end up offering a one-size-fits-all formula for those suffering. What the world needs is a Saviour who can heal the issues of the soul and keep the people healed throughout their lives. Until we acknowledge our need for the Lord’s redemptive plan we will keep digging ourselves into a cavern of doubt and mistrust. We are seeing this now on a large scale, and many no longer trust any authority or institution to come through for the needs of society. The world is in a state of limbo trying to find some solid footing on the ever-moving foundations of life. We need a solid saviour who we can believe. Acts 4:11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

The reason that all this psychobabble exists is man’s unwillingness to admit that they did not create themselves or have the destiny of their lives mapped out. The constant insistence that man knows better than God, has brought the entire mess of the world upon their heads. All the clichés and netspeak in the world cannot explain away the saving power of the risen Lord. Jesus said plainly, “I the way, the truth, and the life.” He did not say, He was a teacher of positive thinking in the area of truth, or He had a better idea for harmonious living. He was emphatic that He is the answer to all life’s problems and issues, plus He proclaims to be the Saviour of the world. John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

People are looking for a way out of the mess they are in. Jesus said, “He is the way.” Many are looking for the truth to live by. Jesus said, “He is the truth.” Everyone is looking for something worth living for and a fulfilling life. Jesus said, “He is the life.”  Jesus’ bold statements were given to us to hang our hearts, minds, and souls on. Christ can be counted on to give us the peace we are looking for in a world that has adopted a technobabble philosophy that has dulled the hearts of many. It is in Christ that life is found and I pray we all find it soon. Acts 17:28 For in Him we live and move and are.’ As also some of the poets among you have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.‘

Ironies To Contemplate

Anger Is Expensive

Proverbs 16:32 He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.         In the early 1980s, while attending Bible college and living in Australia, I ministered in prisons for a few years. A common regret among...

Choose Your Hard

Matthew 11:29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. No matter what people say, life is hard. Some have it much harder than others, but overall, for most of the world's population, life is...

Make Your Bed

Acts 9:33 There he found a certain man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden eight years and was paralyzed. 34 And Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you. Arise and make your bed.” Then he arose immediately.         I heard Derek Prince say, "The voice...

You Can’t Say That!

Matthew 10:19 But when they hand you over, do not worry about how to respond or what to say. In that hour you will be given what to say. My pronouns are The Redeemed of the Lord, and The Righteousness of God through Christ Jesus. You can call me that anytime you want....

A Useful Idiot

Ezekiel 28:18 By the multitude of your iniquities, with the injustice of your trading, you have profaned your holy places. And I have brought forth fire from your midst; it has devoured you, and I have given you to ashes upon the earth, before the eyes of all those...

The Low Hum Of Dread

Joshua 2:10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites across the Jordan, whom you devoted to destruction. 11 When we heard this, our hearts...

That’s A Lot Of Faith

Acts 19:19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totalled fifty thousand pieces of silver.         When God gets hold of a person's heart, there is...

Christianism Falls Short

Galatians 1:8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be under a curse!       Christianism generally refers to the use of Christian principles as a political ideology. This is why Christianism does...

Keep Breathing

Genesis 2:7 Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.         My friend Glennis asked her hundred-year-old grandfather what the secret to longevity was. He...

Living Loving Laughing

Daniel 5:5 In the same hour, the fingers of a man’s hand appeared and wrote opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace; and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. 6 Then the king’s countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him,...

Adjusting To Chaos

Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.         Those who have found themselves easily adjusting to chaos, led by...

And Then What?

Matthew 16:26 What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? If I could have that amount in my bank account, then I could... If I owned that property, then I could.... If I had all that...
