Winning The Race

Proverbs 11:24 There is that scatters, and yet increases; and there is that withholds more than is meet, but it tends to poverty.

Benjamin Franklin said, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”
I was watching a program on how the old carpenters and craftsmen made a lot of their own tools. The wood-planers, in particular, were very sharp and worked incredibly smooth and accurate. There was a discussion with the host of the program and the master tool maker explaining that if this knowledge and know-how of making these tools was not passed on to the next generation of craftsmen then the art of tool making would be lost.

This program had me thinking of all the Christians who have so much of God’s teaching in them but are not passing the information on, and like the knowledge of the craftsmen, this could be lost. We are all a product of the history of all the saints through their trials and tribulations and what was gleaned from their dedicated lives. They have passed on what they experienced, good or bad, and we have to do the same. John 4:37 And herein is that saying true, One sows, and another reaps.
The writer of the book of Hebrews says that we are in a race to finish our God-given life purpose on this earth. Heb. 12:1b Let us run with patience the race that is set before us. This race, however, is not to compete with each other but rather to help each other cross that eternal finish line where all of us will hear our Lord say, “‘Well done, good and faithful servant!”
Taking someone under our wing in order to help and guide them find the answers to their life is not that difficult for those of us who have learned how to live by God’s word. We just have to want to do it. The process is simple enough as we all have the same instruction manual – the Bible – at our fingertips. With prayer, we lead our brothers and sisters to search the scriptures and find the word in season that is needed in their lives.
Have I oversimplified this? Not really. I have noticed lately that a lot of the newer Christians are not reading the word of God but are repeating what they have heard someone say the word of God says. This is where we have to help them change the way they grow and mature in their Christian walk. They have got to read the word of God themselves to glean what the Holy Spirit is saying to them.

We have a perfect example in the book of Acts that shows us plainly the importance of finding out what the word of God says. In the book of Acts, we read of the Bereans who were being taught the word of God by Paul and Silas. These apostles were not light-weights. When they spoke there was power and miraculous manifestations and yet the Berean saints still went and looked up the Scriptures to see if what was said was true. Acts 17:10 The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue.11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

The word of God is the final authority in our lives and the word of God should be what we guide our lives with. Teaching the next generation to use this wonderful gift that many martyrs gave up their lives for is our mandate. John 4:38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.

The last thing Jesus said before He was taken into Glory was to go out and make disciples of all nations. We can trust the word of God to do and be the Christian’s life handbook. We can count on the accuracy of its prophetic declarations. 2 Pet. 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
Winning the race that is before us is a collaboration with illumination that has been sown in our hearts. We go to the Scriptures and see if what is said is true and we help our brothers and sisters in the Lord do the same so that we all win the holy race of eternal salvation. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Praise The Lord!

  1. Thank you. I've been doing a lot of learning and teaching this past week, as my family is hurting deeply and counting on me to bring them the Word. I have been in the Bible a lot and looking for some direction to give them. It is a responsibility and a pleasure, however, it can be a little stressful at first, dealing with all the emotions. It is much easier to help those when you're not directly part of the situation and hurting yourself I suppose…Thanks again.

Ironies To Contemplate

Anger Is Expensive

Proverbs 16:32 He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.         In the early 1980s, while attending Bible college and living in Australia, I ministered in prisons for a few years. A common regret among...

Choose Your Hard

Matthew 11:29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. No matter what people say, life is hard. Some have it much harder than others, but overall, for most of the world's population, life is...

Make Your Bed

Acts 9:33 There he found a certain man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden eight years and was paralyzed. 34 And Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you. Arise and make your bed.” Then he arose immediately.         I heard Derek Prince say, "The voice...

You Can’t Say That!

Matthew 10:19 But when they hand you over, do not worry about how to respond or what to say. In that hour you will be given what to say. My pronouns are The Redeemed of the Lord, and The Righteousness of God through Christ Jesus. You can call me that anytime you want....

A Useful Idiot

Ezekiel 28:18 By the multitude of your iniquities, with the injustice of your trading, you have profaned your holy places. And I have brought forth fire from your midst; it has devoured you, and I have given you to ashes upon the earth, before the eyes of all those...

The Low Hum Of Dread

Joshua 2:10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites across the Jordan, whom you devoted to destruction. 11 When we heard this, our hearts...

That’s A Lot Of Faith

Acts 19:19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totalled fifty thousand pieces of silver.         When God gets hold of a person's heart, there is...

Christianism Falls Short

Galatians 1:8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be under a curse!       Christianism generally refers to the use of Christian principles as a political ideology. This is why Christianism does...

Keep Breathing

Genesis 2:7 Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.         My friend Glennis asked her hundred-year-old grandfather what the secret to longevity was. He...

Living Loving Laughing

Daniel 5:5 In the same hour, the fingers of a man’s hand appeared and wrote opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace; and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. 6 Then the king’s countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him,...

Adjusting To Chaos

Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.         Those who have found themselves easily adjusting to chaos, led by...

And Then What?

Matthew 16:26 What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? If I could have that amount in my bank account, then I could... If I owned that property, then I could.... If I had all that...
