Malachi 3:16 At that time those who feared the LORD spoke to one another. The LORD took notice and listened. So a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who feared the LORD and had high regard for His name.
God writes our story, and much of it is written with invisible ink. We cannot read all the fine details of the account of our existence because the Lord’s master plan is much more immense than we can imagine. If we were writing our story our goals would not be large or lofty enough because we would fall for all the regular stuff like riches, fame, and power. The ho-hum human endeavours and life-long goal of owning a fast car, a big house, and a great retirement package would become an ink stain on the story of our life’s purpose. There is nothing wrong with these everyday goals but they are simplistic, earthbound, and temporal and they become distractions to the infinite reasons we were created. Rev. 4:11 You art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for you have created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
When we get out of God’s way and allow Him to write our story, then an illiterate man can become a writer or a person born with a deformed leg can become a world track-running Olympian. A woman who cannot bear children becomes the mother and founder of a successful children’s orphanage. When God is writing, we are truly living the will of the Godhead. William Wilberforce was a politician to some, but with God inking his thoughts, he became a champion and campaigned to abolish the British slave trade. Florence Nightingale wanted to be a nurse, but when the Lord’s hand wrote her story she became the leader of thirty-eight women who volunteered to walk the battlefield and bring healing to the starving and wounded soldiers of the Crimean War. Many people today who have the same spirit and heart as Florence and Wiliam are at the tip of the Lord’s pen ready to be described in God’s words. These are your everyday people who are willing to go out in this lost world and bring Christ along their way, by allowing God to write their history. Heb. 12:2a Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.
The Bible records many ordinary people who were simply moving along in their day when God’s ink started to jot down a different tale that would change their lives forever. Mark 15:21 And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. Simon, the father of two sons, would bring home a story that would be talked about with zeal once the resurrection of Jesus was proclaimed. Who knows what invisible ink was now being written of Rufus and Alexander’s life because they had heard of the barbaric cross their father was forced to carry for Jesus? Simon, a countryman, was coming to town to pick up what was needed for the Passover celebration and ended up being written into the story of the Passover Lamb of God.
The Apostle Paul’s chronicle was scripted into a living story that would engross readers of the New Testament for centuries to come. God’s quill was scribing an eternal narrative of many characters who would become part of the building of the church body of Christ. One of the subplots was about a runaway slave who became one of Paul’s helpers while he was in prison. Onesimus was running from a human master only to meet up with the master of the universe and become a slave of value to God and His kingdom. Paul intercedes on behalf of Onesimus and asks Philemon to take him back not just as a slave but as a brother in Christ. Philemon. 1:15 It seems you lost Onesimus for a little while so that you could have him back forever. 16 He is no longer like a slave to you. He is more than a slave, for he is a beloved brother, especially to me. Now he will mean much more to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord.
Not only did Onesimus come back a born-again brother in Christ, but he returned with Tychicus who would give a true account of what Paul was writing about to the Colossian church. Col. 4:9 And with him is Onesimus, our faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will let you know everything about the situation here in Rome. Onesimus ran away as an untrustworthy slave and came back a faithful redeemed servant, delivering letters that would build the church where Philemon was one of the leaders. The invisible ink of God runs through our stories and we need to let Him write His Word on our hearts so that we may be the catalysts of the Lord’s ever-expanding church. There is room for billions more and that story is being written by God the Father.
You might think of yourself as an unlikely character in one of God’s eternal stories. This is the lie that Satan wants you to believe because the devil knows the moment you start walking in the narrative God has penned out for you, your ability to destroy the works of the enemy becomes part of your everyday walk in Christ. We are the New Testament story God is writing and we are the people God is using to bring about His kingdom on earth. Jesus said that we walk in a greater privilege and anointing than what came before. Matt. 11:11 I assure you and most solemnly say to you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater in privilege than he. How can we not let God write our stories? He is the master author of all history and if we submit to the will of God we will be written into the narrative God has chosen. May it be said of us that we were a blessing to write about.
