Proverbs 10:6 Blessings crown the head of the righteous, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked.
We are crowned with blessings. Prov. 10:6a Blessings crown the head of the righteous. Not only are we crowned with righteousness, but the Psalmist, when expressing awe at God’s love for mankind, said that we are crowned with glory and majesty. Psalm 8:5 Yet You have made him a little lower than God, and You crown him with glory and majesty! That is a striking visual to wrap our minds around. The fact that All Mighty God puts His hand on our heads in love and places a crown upon us, is a lot to take in, but a joyful scene.
The crown that the Lord secured for us through His sacrifice on the cross; is a crown of righteousness and blessing that we wear. To be crowned with glory and majesty is a gift with responsibility. We are to protect it with all our hearts and we are to make sure it is not taken from us. Rev. 3:11 I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one takes your crown. We need to be vigilant and ready to fight the good fight of faith to keep the crown God gave us.
Jacob did everything he could to possess God’s blessing. He manipulated, wrestled, worked for, and invented strategies to have the blessings of God upon his life. He chased the blessings and eventually wrestled with God for them. Gen. 32:26 Then He said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking.” But he said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” The tenacity it took for Jacob to hold onto God until he got what he wanted was done with pure stubbornness of will, which is something we need to take note of and be as tenacious in protecting our crown of blessing. Gen. 32:28 And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
The perseverance Jacob displayed to acquire the blessing of God, not only resulted in God giving him the blessing, but God also gave Jacob a new name. Talk about getting the Lord’s attention. Everything Jacob wanted and went through to acquire God’s blessings, already belongs to us who are in Christ. We have these blessings poured on us every day. We need to realize, that it is by faith we receive the blessings God has given us. They are there for anyone who wants them. We might ask this question of ourselves. Do we want God’s blessings as much as Jacob did?
When I think about what Jacob went through to receive the blessing of God, I have to wonder if I would have had that kind of jam of character to keep chasing God’s blessings. We tend to take a lot of what God gives us for granted and we are not always grateful for the many blessings that are poured out on us daily. Jacob did not assume anything but rather consumed the idea of having God’s blessings in his life. Would we be so willing to position ourselves and try to find that open heaven where the blessings of God flow? With all his heart, Jacob wanted to be blessed and I believe that was the key for the blessings of God to come upon Jacob.
Jacob demonstrated his faith by stripping the bark off branches to manipulate whether or not the sheep born would be spotted or streaked. Gen. 30:38 He set the peeled branches in the troughs in front of the sheep — in the water channels where the sheep came to drink. And the sheep bred when they came to drink. Would you be willing to try something that would cause your faith to grow and believe the blessings of God are coming your way? In the book of Malachi God instructs us to test Him by tithing. Mal. 3:10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test! This is a call to action from our Lord to keep the windows of heaven open so that blessings are pouring upon us.
Yes, we are crowned with blessings and we have God’s permission and encouragement to keep seeking the blessings He has for us. The Lord will make sure that we are not ripped off by the enemy of our souls. Just like the Lord did for Jacob, He will do for us. The Lord will keep His eye on our lives to help us be blessed in His salvation. Gen. 31:10 When the flocks were breeding, I saw in a dream that the streaked, spotted, and speckled males were mating with the females. 11 In that dream the Angel of God said to me, ‘Jacob!’ and I said: Here I am. 12 And He said, ‘Look up and see: all the males that are mating with the flocks are streaked, spotted, and speckled, for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.”
God knows the situations we face, and He keeps track of what belongs to us. We can rest in that assurance. Since we are crowned with blessings, let us walk in this favour that is set before us and bring these blessings to a lost world that needs as many of God’s blessings as possible. This is part of the good news message. God wants to save and bless us. God is good and He is a blessing.
