Proverbs 28:13 He that covers his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesses and forsakes them shall have mercy.
When we become our own saviors because we are covering up a sin that we will not acknowledge or deal with, it causes problems within our souls and hearts. It also strains the relationship we have with Christ because He is trying to point out to us that He has already done the saving through the cross and His blood. Heb. 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
The work that Christ did at the cross is done completely. The attempts at saving ourselves with good works will be a never-ending-story because when we are not bringing our sins and transgressions to the Lord to be rid of them, then we are covering them up. The result of this self-righteousness will be a flawed and insipid Christianity. The duplicity and subterfuge we practice will only diminish our strength in the Lord who is trying to reconcile us to Himself, but we falter at whatever we do.
We read in the book of Joshua, chapter seven, the story of Achan. The story is known as “The sin of Achan.” The people of Israel were instructed by God to conquer the city of Jericho as they began to take possession of the promise land. They were also instructed not to take anything whatsoever for themselves as the spoils were for God’s agenda. Joshua 6:19 But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the LORD: they shall come into the treasury of the LORD.

Achan disobeyed and took some of the spoils and it brought judgment on the people of God when they tried to overtake the city of Ai. Through a process of elimination, Achan was discovered to be the reason for the judgment that had defeated them.
When Joshua confronts Achan, his responds is this. Josh 7:21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly  Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
Achan had literally covered his sin in his tent and it brought a great loss to himself and his family. Joshua 7:24 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor. 25 And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones. This cover-up caused the death of himself and his children. As it says in Num. 32:23b And be sure your sin will find you out.

Thank God we live on this side of the cross and there is forgiveness for sin when we repent. Thank you, Lord, that our pastor does not organize a “stone the parishioner to death” portion of the Sunday service. Grace has given us such a wonderful relationship with our Lord and Savior. However, unconfessed-sin can still cause us to be affected in our walk with Christ to the point of not prospering at what we put our hearts to do in life.
James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. We stumble for a lack of Godly confidence. Confession and forsaking sin will still bring mercy into our lives and will help us have mercy for others who are struggling with different weaknesses.
We are exhorted to come to God’s throne for mercy and grace. Heb. 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. God is saying run to Him, and not run from Him when we sin. John 6:37 All that the Father gives me shall come to me; and him that comes to me I will in no wise cast out.
In his book, Enemies Of The Heart. Andy Stanley says, “It is easier to behave your way to a new way of thinking than think your way to a new way of behaving.” This is what the Lord is trying to get us to do. If we come boldly to the throne of grace to obtain mercy, regardless of how bad we feel about falling in sin, the reward of going to God’s throne will change our self-righteous behavior. Our obedient behavior will result in submission to Christ, the Savior, and we will obtain true mercy and grace.
Covering up our sins and trespasses will only put us in a position to be accused by the enemy. Eph. 4:27 Neither give place to the devil. This will only sap our strength and we will become lazy Christians with no affect or victory in life. We came to Christ in the first place because it was only Him who could cover and get rid of our sins forever. Why stop coming to Him now?
He still is the way,  the truth, and the life. Lord, help us to uncover everything that causes grief to your heart and help us to be courageous in humility, for you have all the answers for our souls. In Jesus name we ask. Amen.

There Is No Hate Like Christian Hate

Proverbs 6:16 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to Him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a lying witness who gives false...

Anger Is Expensive

Proverbs 16:32 He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.         In the early 1980s, while attending Bible college and living in Australia, I ministered in prisons for a few years. A common regret among...

The Low Hum Of Dread

Joshua 2:10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites across the Jordan, whom you devoted to destruction. 11 When we heard this, our hearts...

That’s A Lot Of Faith

Acts 19:19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totalled fifty thousand pieces of silver.         When God gets hold of a person's heart, there is...

Christianism Falls Short

Galatians 1:8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be under a curse!       Christianism generally refers to the use of Christian principles as a political ideology. This is why Christianism does...

Keep Breathing

Genesis 2:7 Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.         My friend Glennis asked her hundred-year-old grandfather what the secret to longevity was. He...

Living Loving Laughing

Adjusting To Chaos

Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.         Those who have found themselves easily adjusting to chaos, led by...
