Based On A True Story

by Oct 4, 2023Devotional1 comment

1John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true—in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life

Whenever there is a movie that is advertised as Based on a true story, chances are the result will be nothing like the true story that truly happened. The production studios will have whitewashed the story to suit their loose interpretation, budgets, and the audience’s ability to follow the narrative. We have all read a book about the true events that captured our hearts, causing great thoughts of inspiration, enlightening our ability to understand, and bringing us to places we never thought possible. Then one day, we hear a movie is coming out based on our favourite authentic story and we already know in our hearts, that it will be a hack job by the time it is available for viewing.

This type of rewriting of history is taking place right under our noses. We need to do the fact-checking of dates and who said certain things, but not rewrite and eliminate whole parts of the nasty, evil, and corrupt events we as a nation took part in. We can be proud of our country as we improve as a society, but we need to face the wrongs that were done so that we do not repeat the brutality of what was once considered acceptable behaviour. We get rid of our sins when we confess them and repent of them. It is no different for nations. Nations must also repent of their sinful wrongs.

What we are witnessing is not a conspiracy theory. We are watching the narrative of certain historical events being rewritten to suit the ideology of certain factions of society. We are seeing a strategic plan to deny true historical events like the Holocaust, where six million Jewish souls were murdered. Recently some of the anti-Semitic hate speech has been expressed in this manner “It was only about a hundred thousand killed and not six million. Oh, I see, that makes it all nice and forthright because it was ONLY a hundred thousand people murdered in the name of nationalism. Yeah right, just rewrite the historical evils that were done to suit the capacity of our callous heart’s tolerance to accept a level of evil one can live with. Talk about ignorance gone to seed. Matt. 24:12 And because lawlessness is to be multiplied, the love of the many will grow cold.

To deny that slavery, residential school child abuse, war crimes, and genocide toward large people groups truly happened, will only place us in a position to repeat these same atrocities all over again. If on a national scale, these sins are not acknowledged and repented of with an honest heart, then history will repeat. Just because the horrible events of our nation’s past do not sit well with those who do not want to face the true story of the maliciousness their ancestors took part in, is not a case for denying these iniquities took place. It happened, so what are we going to do about it? Hopefully, make sure it doesn’t happen again. The Word of God warns us that there will be a great apostasy, a falling away from honesty as we head toward the last days. The choice of listening to the doctrines of devils instead of the truth will be something to consider. 1Tim. 4:1 The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.

When there is a polluted river, one needs to go back to the source of the river to find clean water or to the true cleanliness of that river. It is no different in the world today when looking for the true answers to the overwhelming confusion going on in many people’s lives. If we go to the source of truth, we find Jesus standing there waiting for us to accept His love and guidance to help us overcome the evil in this hazardous world. John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Jesus said He is the truth or the true story for the rest of us to line our stories with and live in the love God has for us. The Apostle John said there is no falsehood in Jesus. John 7:18b In Him there is no falsehood.

Therefore, I will base my life on the true story of Jesus Christ who died on the cross for my sins and gave me eternal life. I do not need to rewrite the history of my sinful past because Jesus is the author and finisher of my faith, and I know He will get the story right. I don’t have to cover up the iniquities of my past and minimize the sinfulness I took part in, I can let the Lord’s cleansing blood wash away my sins in the fullness of Christ’s righteousness. I can confess my sins and be forgiven. I can live the true story God has written for me from the time He first thought of me. Jer. 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope.

From now on, it will be said that Norm’s life is based on a true story that was written by God. 1John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true—in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. It is up to me and all of us to live in the fullness of what has been written in God’s Word concerning our lives in Christ and our future with Him. May we live it well! Num. 6:24 The Lord bless you and keep you; 25 the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; 26 the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. Thank you, Lord, I love this particular happy ending.
