A Trembling Earth

by May 8, 2024Devotional4 comments

Proverbs 30:21 There are three things that make the earth tremble— no, four it cannot endure.

Some of the damaging factors that cause the earth to tremble are gravity, erosion, and oxidation. From the moment the earth was created and formed these God-made laws of nature,  have caused constant changes and trembling throughout our planet’s existence. Oxidation is the chemical reaction that takes place when a substance comes into contact with oxygen. Gravity keeps the substance of the earth from drifting away and helps explain earthquakes because gravity is the force that attracts everything toward the earth’s center. Erosion is the geological process in which wind and water tear away at the materials the earth is made of. One way or another these laws keep the world trembling and changing as it moves around its axis. Prov. 30:21 There are three things that make the earth tremble— no, four it cannot endure.

The earth and everyone on it is subject to this planet’s laws, and we cannot escape the shaking and trembling because the source code for the earth was set at creation. God’s proclamation of how the natural systems would work upon earth’s rotation, makes our existence subject to what happens here whether the event is cataclysmic or steady changes over time. We are bound by the laws of erosion, gravity, and oxidation that will eventually damage the vital molecules in our cells and we will break down and return to the dust from which we were created. We are permanently reliant on this earth and subject to its laws. Well thanks, Norm, for that uplifting word of encouragement.

I do not mean to sound like Doctor Death, but facing the reality of gravity pulling upon us and eventually oxidizing our way into our old age, will make us tremble unless we have an exit strategy. In all these laws that are at work around us and bringing us closer to our death, we can, through Christ, break through the law of death. We will all die, but we will not all suffer death and the torment of it. God has given us His Son Jesus, so that we may be cleansed of our sins, (which is the fourth thing listed in Proverbs 30;21 the earth cannot endure) and cause us to overcome the laws that lead to eternal death. 1Cor. 15:51 Listen, I am telling you a mystery: We will not all fall asleep, but we will all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed.

When Jesus said He was the only way to the Father, we should also realize that He is the only way through life as well. He is the One who knows how to appear in a room, talk with those present and then leave the room by disappearing. John 20:19 That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” He said. Luke 24:36 And just as they were telling about it, Jesus Himself was suddenly standing there among them. “Peace be with you,” He said. The trembling earth had no laws working against Jesus because He had overcome death and destruction. This same Jesus lives in our hearts.

I do not know what on earth you might be trembling about but know that Jesus has and can overcome the events that are causing your quivering heart and emotions to experience fear, grief, and sorrow. I have heard there is a new anxiety that the younger generations are suffering from. There is something called The Climate Change Anxiety Scale. This measures the chronic fear of environmental doom that the younger people face along with their daily struggles. Luke 21:26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. There is nothing new here. From the day that man looked to God to be delivered of fears, disaster, and sickness so has the earth been groaning for the coming of the Lord. Even the environment wants to be delivered from the consequences of sin. Rom. 8:22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.

In the middle of a storm at sea, Jesus stood up in the boat as His disciples trembled with fear and Jesus said to the wind and waves to be still, and immediately nature’s elements were still. The storms of life will come and the erosion of the earth will go on as it always has. However, those who are walking with Jesus will sail with the fair winds of their faith, and overcome the shaking of the world’s systems. Will there be some difficult times as we go forth in life? Yes, the battles are many and need to be won, but with the Lord leading the fight, we can overcome any struggle that comes our way. The Lord invites anyone who has become weary of all the trembling that is going on and is tired of carrying the burdens of life by themselves. Matt. 11:28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Yes, Lord, in the midst of all that is unstable, give us the rest we are longing for.

    • Hi Larry
Thank you, for your kind words. A lot of the things I write about are inspired by a lot of the reading that I do. I often have about three books going at a time and this keeps me from being bored:) Also, I pick up a lot of ideas and what is important to people through the conversations that come up during counselling sessions. Hang out with people who help you grow and let them help you be accountable to God’s Word. Blessings to you bro.

  2. Hi Norm,
Romans 8: 2 (KJV) says ‘FOR THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE IN CHRIST JESUS HAS MADE ME FREE FROM THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH’.
We have to believe that His work was done from the foundation of the world and maintain a strong believing faith in Him to enter into His rest.
God is NOT impressed with our paltry works. He only accepts the work of the cross completed by the one He sent ( that we are commanded to believe in) to fulfil the work of God.
The REST of God comes through daily surrender to His life and living. We are to keep the faith and stop thinking we have to do something to attract God’s attention and He will give us brownie points. Christ gets the glory. Not us. He and He alone gets the credit.
This aging thing… I thought it was entropy. Thank God we are spiritual. The flesh profits nothing.
As someone once said, “I’m looking for the up taker, not the undertaker”.
    Praise the Lord hey Norm.
