Revelation 2:17 The one having an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one overcoming, I will give to him the manna having been hidden, and I will give to him a white stone, and on the stone a new name having been written, which no one has known, except the one receiving it.
I was introduced to a young lady at church who spoke in sign language. Of course, I needed help from her mother to communicate what was being said, and I was grateful for the conversation that did take place and the understanding that was reached. I got to understand Miss Emma Rae through the help of Katya, her mother. As a communicator, I wished I too could understand this mysterious language of finger movements and hand gestures, which expressed what was in Emma’s heart. The beautiful blessing that came out of this conversation was that Emma gave me a name in sign. With fingers positioned and a hand gesture, she said my sign name is Norm Writing. I was shown how to write my name in sign with the hand movements needed, and my new name was birthed and brought into the light of reality.
My heart was touched because Miss Emma had given me an identity that came from her heart, and she expressed it over me with the poise of a queen, granting knighthoods. I received the name with gratitude and the hope of living up to its strength. Yes, Norm Writing is who I am in much of my life, and hopefully, writing the correct oracles that God has said is the truth. This whole experience reminded me of a day when I will understand the new name God gave me. Rev. 2:17b And I will give to him a white stone, and on the stone a new name having been written, which no one has known, except the one receiving it. I have always loved this scripture because the idea that God would present me with a new name is beyond heartwarming and brings the meaning of personal relationship home to my heart.
Everyone wants a second chance to make up for what was said in anger, fix the terrible mistake that brought harm to many, or redo the foolish choices that were made, causing the awful consequences that are now being lived with. The names loser, liar, traitor, adulterer, thief, murderer, coward, embezeler, unfaithful, molester, and manipulator remind us that many people are living with labels that have wrecked their lives because they could not come out from under the weight of the names laid upon them. Satan’s desire to keep a person from excelling and becoming who God created them to be has many more names available to tear a person’s soul apart. John 10:10a The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.
This is one of the first things Jesus addresses when we are born again. At our new birth in Christ, we begin to live with the new name that God has for us, and He leads us to find out who we are in Christ. The old had passed away, and we have become new living beings in Christ. 2Cor. 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. From the beginning of developing a relationship with the Lord, our names change to sons and daughters of God. We are the salt and light of the world. We become the heirs of salvation, the kings and priests of the Lord. After our new birth, God begins to change our identity by calling us the apple of His eye and the temple of the Holy Spirit. We become His ambassadors, the elect, and even friends of God. Our new name has power and is full of God’s righteous healing for our whole being.
We must affirm each other in the identity God has given us through God the Son, who takes away the sins we have taken part in. We need each other to walk in the power and authority of who we are in Christ. Out of those who were curious about Jesus, some became followers and others became disciples of Jesus, and out of them, some became the apostles. As their relationship with God grew, so did their names change to reflect the maturity, responsibility, and dedication they were developing. Matt. 13:12a For whoever has spiritual wisdom because he is receptive to God’s word, to him more will be given, and he will be richly and abundantly supplied.
Sometimes the name will come from Jesus Himself. John 1:42 He led him to Jesus. Having looked at him, Jesus said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You will be called Cephas” (which means Peter). At other times, you will hear it from the most unlikely source. Rahab had called the nation of Israel a terror that had come upon the people. In short, she had declared Israel conquerors before the battle had begun. Josh. 2:9 And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you. Rahab said, “You are a winner, a conqueror, and a victor. You will rule over our country because of your relationship with the only true God, and I want to be part of your country.”
If it is a new name that you need, then develop a relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ. The name God gives you is more valuable than anything this universe can offer you. To Miss Emma Rae, I am Norm Writing. To my students, I am Sir Norm. To my mom, I am Sonny Boy, but to God, I am called Clean. John 15:3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. May we rest in the name God gives us and live up to the value of that name. In Jesus’ name!
