A Lazy Spirit

by Aug 19, 2014Devotional1 comment

Proverbs 26:13 The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.

Sloth. What a word. When the bible talks about a slothful character it is normally defined as spiritual or emotional apathy, neglecting what God has spoken, and being physically and emotionally inactive. Neglecting what God has spoken is the reason for the majority of the world’s misfortunes. Luke 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
The adage, “No pain no gain,” has room here in that doing what God says will take gumption and courage on many levels. However, if we are willing to obey God through the Holy Spirit, He will help us get the victory in obedience. God’s desire for us is to overcome, not just survive. God’s thoughts toward us are pleasant and loving. Jer. 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Wow! God is for us and our well-being to accomplish what He created us to fulfill in the body of Christ and His kingdom. Rom. 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

The reason we are attacked with a spirit of slothfulness is that if we submit to this spirit, then we end up doing the devil’s work for him. James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. If we are not observing and doing what the word says but only giving lip service to it then the enemy has us deceived into doing exactly what he wants, and that is being a pretend Christian.
The devil no longer has to bother with us if we are not obeying the word because we become self-deceived in the spirit of slothfulness. So, the result is that every endeavor of spiritual growth that the slothful man encounters becomes an adversary or a lion in the street because there is no will to overcome and fear takes root.
We end up with a lazy spirit, not able to discern spiritual life. Now, there is a difference between a person with a slothful soul and a person who physically cannot function. Someone with MS may be physically slow but can be mighty in spirit to acquire their healing by faith.
Thomas Edison said, “Discontent is the first necessity of progress.” A slothful attitude toward God’s word will take some real repenting as in a change of mind toward the word that God says is true in our lives. We will have to become discontent with the status-quo in order to stop seeing a lion in the street at every turn and stop using the alleged lion as an excuse for our lack of growth. We will find the courage to want the victory over slothfulness when we are truthful with ourselves Jer. 29:13 And ye shall seek Me, and find Me, when ye shall search for Me with all your heart.
There is a lot of discrepant information that we give credence to when a lazy spirit is evident in our lives. As my pastor David Kalamen, says, “If you do not believe in something, you will fall for anything.” Neglecting what God has spoken is not just sloth or an oversight. It is the beginning of an unsure relationship with Him. If we are neglecting what God says during a regular day’s event, then what will we do when a tragedy occurs?
Jer. 12:5 If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trusted, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan? If we are having difficulty staying focused on our God during a tranquil and peaceful time, what will we do during a hard time? What will be the first words out of our mouth during a turbulent time? Will it be “In the name of Jesus, I pray!?”
The opposite is what happened to a leader named Ahaziah. He fell from a height and suffered a terrible injury. He then tried to find out from a false god if he will live. 2 Kings 1:2 And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go, enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease. The result of his inquiry brought bad news because he did not call on the God who is God, so he got what Baalzebub is, a dead end.
That was the message Elijah delivered to Ahaziah. 2 Kings 1:16 And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, For as much as thou hast sent messengers to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron, is it not because there is no God in Israel to enquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. Someone might say this is an extreme example, but I say, “Not so.” When we continue to live with a lazy spirit toward God and His word, we will not naturally choose His word when calamity comes our way. If our choice is anything other than God’s word, we end up ratcheting up the terrible event into a desperate state of being because we fumble out of the gate already defeated.
Like Elijah said, “Is it because there is no relationship with God in your life?” The result ends in a life of living from one crisis to another. This is not for us, Saints! We need to reject all forms of sloth in our lives so that the only lion in the street is – The Lion Of Judah – who is on our side protecting us. Rev. 5:5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” Amen!

  1. Good word Norm.
I was just thinking this morning as I was waking up about how much immaturity we have in the Christian camp.
What came to me was man has to mature himself … that maturity comes by being obedient to the word of God.
The discipline of the flesh and the feeding of the spirit.
